What Does the Word Awesome Mean in the Bible

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

God is awesome.

God is awesome.

Synonym For The Word "Awesome"

What exactly do we mean when we say, "God is Awesome?" Is there an appropriate synonym for the word, "awesome?" Can anything else compare to God? I don't believe so. I believe the word "awesome" carries within itself a certain feeling of wonder; a certain feeling of amazement; a certain feeling of mystery.

Many adjectives describe God, but the word awesome" brings about more awe just trying to define it. The word "awesome" itself presents a feeling beyond the ordinary. The word "awesome" means beyond our normal comprehension. With our limited mind we cannot phantom the heights, or depths that the word conjures up. The word "awesome" is so powerful that there is really no other word to define it. The closest and most human definition of awesome is "utter amazement," "extreme wonder."

The Word 'Awesome' Should Be Reserved For God

Personally, I do not think we should use the word "awesome" except when we are describing God. To describe God as awesome and then to come back and call chocolate ice cream awesome is reducing the power and awesomeness of God. God is above all; therefore, if He is awesome as we believe Him to be, then nothing else comes close.

The Bible has a limited use of the word "awesome" and each time it is used, it is in reference to God and His mighty acts. Therefore, I limit the use of the word to apply to only God. "Awesome" is a word I personally don't use loosely. I reserve the use of the word "awesome" because I think nothing on this earth can compare to how great and mighty God is. God is an awesome God. He reigns from the heavens above.

God is an awesome God.

God is an awesome God.

God's Power In the Word "Awesome"

To even say the word "awesome" stirs up a sensation in my heart. I can feel power in the pit of my stomach when I say, "awesome." When I say the word "awesome" something rises up inside of me and makes me want to run on. That is because each time I hear the word "awesome" it reminds me of the power of God.

No human can come close to the awesomeness of God. At our best, we are still filthy rags. Jeremiah said our hearts are deceitful, and we are desperately wicked. We are nothing in comparison with the awesome God who created us.

People have different ways of expressing surprise, wonder, or amazement. We have different ways of expressing awe. There are some things in life that cause us to react, to verbally express how we feel. When I really like something, I usually say, "Fan—tastic!" I have heard others use similar expressions. For instance, Oprah Winfrey usually says, "Amazing! That's Amazing!" Teenagers say, "Cool." Some people say, "Gee Whiz!" or "Gosh" or "Wow!" Gomer Pyles used to say Godleeeeeeee!"

And then there are some people who say nothing. They become spellbound. They become immobile. They become hypnotized. They end up in a stupor. That's what happened to Zacharias — Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist. On being told that he would have a son in his old age, he became speechless with unbelief. He would so surprised; filled with so much awe that he could not speak until his son, John the was born. Then God loosened his tongue after the birth of his son, and Zacharias resumed speaking.

"Awesome"

And then there are some people who express their emotions by actions other than verbal. For instance, John the Revelator was in such awe in the presence of Jesus that he fell at his feet as though dead. After Jesus' resurrection, Mary Madgalene was in such awe when she discovered that the gardener was really Jesus that fell down and began to cling to Him." What an awesome experience!

Anyone who can speak the world into existence is awesome. Anyone who can make a world out of a formless void is awesome. Anyone who can rescue three Hebrew boys out of a fiery furnace without getting burned or smelling like smoke is awesome. Anyone who could hold back the sun while Joshua finished his battle is awesome.

Awesomeness in Old and New Testaments

Throughout the Old and New Testament, we read of the mighty awesome acts of God. One is no more awesome than the next one, but you must admit that there is one that is the ultimate example of the awesomeness of God that affects us personally.

Only our awesome God gives us strength and power to surrender our entire lives to Him, trusting Him with our whole heart, leaning on Him and not on our own understanding. Only our awesome God!
